What is micro-trenching?
Micro trenching is the process of installing ducts within the edges of the sidewalk to house fibre optic cables. A quick, low-impact deployment method, fibre optic cabling is inserted into a small slot-cut trench without damaging or disrupting existing infrastructure.
Project Management
The remote operated micro-trenching machine, cutting slots of 300 mm deep and around 50 to 60 millimetres wide. The equipment puts the soil to one side and the cleaning team follows to clean the trench and debris and pick up and remove the displaced earth from the site.
The duct team then installs fibre optic ducts into these trenches and connects the boundary boxes and manholes through the sleeves installed.
When the ducts are in the ground, a premixed, specific concrete is poured into the slot to fill the cavities in it and under the kerb.
The curing time is around two days, the trenches can be crossed or driven over within an hour.
Once dry, an asphalt layer will be placed in the slot to the same level as the existing asphalt and compaction. A sealing layer will be applied where the cut was made.
